Kurzweil 3000 Foundations (Windows or Macintosh)

What Is It?
Kurzweil 3000 is a powerful tool for differentiating instruction and making curriculum accessible for all students. In this six hours, hands-on training, educators will explore the reading, writing, vocabulary, study skills, test-taking and scanning features of Kurzweil 3000 and learn how to apply them in the classroom to support individual, small group and whole class instruction and effectively support students who struggle.

Who Should Attend?
This workshop is designed for general and special educators, SLPs, OTs, AT specialists, paraprofessionals and parents who support students with learning disabilities and are new to (or have limited experience with) Kurzweil 3000.

Workshop Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with opening, editing and saving files in a computer operating system.

    Participants will be able to

  • Use reading features, including reading speed, reading unit, and voice options to accommodate student abilities and learning styles
  • Access word support and reference tools to build vocabulary and improve decoding skills
  • Use study skills tools including highlighting and text annotations to facilitate active learning and complete worksheets and tests
  • Use writing supports, such as talking spell checker and audible typing, to help students become better writers and editors of their own work

    Kurzweil 3000 Curriculum Integration (Windows or Macintosh)

    What Is It?
    The goal of this make and take workshop is for you to create a Kurzweil 3000 infused unit of study that you can use in your classroom tomorrow. You will bring the curriculum materials and activities that you want to adapt to enable students of varying skills to work on the same content with varying scaffolds of support. The day begins with a discussion of your project and then you prepare your digital curriculum material by scanning and editing a chapter of print-based text. Once you digital text is created, you will discuss, explore, and incorporate Kurzweil 3000 features in the pre-reading, reading and post reading activities of your lesson. The day concludes with sharing with your peers on how Kurzweil 3000 features were incorporated in your lesson activities.

    Who Should Attend?
    This workshop is designed for General and Special Educators, SLPs, OTs, Reading Specialists, AT specialists and paraprofessionals who are using Kurzweil 3000 for Windows with their struggling students; but want more practical ideas and experience with integrating Kurzweil 3000 into their curriculum.

    Workshop Prerequisites:

  • Prior attendance at a full day Foundations Workshop or other full day Kurzweil 3000 hands-on training.

    Introduction to IntelliTools Classroom Suite

    What Is It?
    Classroom Suite v.4 is a unique Response to Intervention tool that combines the power of direct instruction within a flexible tool environment to help students in grades Pre-K through 5 achieve mastery in reading, writing and math. Classroom Suite provides students with explicit instruction, constructive practice and embedded assessments. Classroom Suite includes research-based activity templates that can be used out-of-the-box, or easily customized to meet targeted needs. The Classroom Suite training shows teachers how to meet the needs of their diverse classroom to ensure curriculum is accessible to all students. Using a fun, exploratory, and inquiry based learning method; teachers will leave the training empowered and capable of using the IntelliTools Classroom Suite right away!

    Who Should Attend?
    This workshop is designed for educators, SLPs, OTs, AT specialists, paraprofessionals and parents who are new to (or have limited experience with) Classroom Suite v.4.

    The goal of the Foundation Workshop for Classroom Suite v.4 is to enable educators to understand how to use Classroom Suite to teach early concepts, reading, writing, and math to students struggling due to learning difficulties or access issues.

    Introduction to Overlay Maker 3

    What Is It?
    Learn to create overlays to provide access to IntelliTools Classroom Suite and other software programs. Learn how to modify an overlay for individual preferences, such as size or color of keys. Learn how to personalize the IntelliKeys settings for specific access needs. Make Overlay Maker 3 your accessibility center, connecting you to IntelliTools Classroom Suite, Boardmaker 5 symbol libraries, the DynaVox 4, and any software program with keyboard access such as Adobe Reader®.

    Goal:
    To demonstrate the advantages of using Overlay Maker 3 and IntelliKeys to easily and effectively provide access to the computer for children and adults.

    Early Childhood, Early Learning, and Easy Switch

    What Is It?
    The Early Childhood - Low Incidence Conference is devoted to exploring solutions for students who are PreK-1st grade and those who have significant physical or cognitive disabilities. Special attention will be placed on using IntelliTools Classroom Suite to provide access to early learning concepts in math and language arts for these students. Participants will explore assessment, scanning strategies, cause-and-effect activities, making the most of digital graphics and recorded sounds, and templates designed for simple and quick authoring.

    Goal
    To demonstrate the advantages of using IntelliTools Classroom Suite to easily and effectively meet the needs of early learners and cognitively delayed students in your district.

    IntelliBraille

    What Is It?
    IntelliBraille, used with IntelliTools Classroom Suite, Overlay Maker 3, and IntelliKeys, is one of the few educational software programs for blind students. It contains over 115 activities, all accessible for Braille and low vision students. The program includes 16 lessons on the Literary Braille Code, beginning with the alphabet and proceeding through all contractions and five lessons on the Dolch Words (including pre-primer, primer, first, second, and third grade).  Several activities, such as Nature and Vehicles, have been developed for young congenitally blind children. Participants will also learn how to create their own activities to provide access for blind and low vision students.

    Goal
    To demonstrate access to curriculum for blind and low vision students using IntelliTools Classroom Suite, Overlay Maker, IntelliKeys, and IntelliBraille.

    Key Topics

  • Identifying and using the basic keystrokes needed to navigate text and the other accessibility features built into IntelliTools Classroom Suite.
  • Developing confidence in using the Braille curriculum activities included on the IntelliBraille CD.
  • Understanding how to Braille and use the overlays included in file format on the IntelliBraille CD.
  • Participants Will:

  • Learn how to use the pre-made Braille activities to teach reading, writing, and math.
  • Investigate the powerful accessibility tools built into IntelliTools Classroom Suite.
  • Create activities specific to the needs of their blind and visually impaired students including creating orientation and mobility maps and beginning talking stories.
  • Use the Braille activities with the Literary Braille Code and the Dolch Words.

    Teaching Literacy Through IntelliTools Classroom Suite

    What Is It?
    IntelliTools Classroom Suite includes many activities and templates that address the needs of the struggling reader and writer. This workshop will take a look at the writing activities that support word choice, grammar, fluency, and author's voice. Teachers will have an opportunity to use and create word study activities including phonics, rhyming and initial letters. You'll also explore simple reading activities that help students independently select stories which are easy to read with fluency. Guided reading before, during, and after teacher-directed activities will lead the student to use strategies that help them become better readers. Activities created will use the features of IntelliTools Classroom Suite to make learning fun.

    Goal
    To learn how to find, use, and modify the many activities and templates that meet the literacy needs of a wide variety of students.

    Creating Accessible Books with IntelliTools Classroom Suite

    What Is It?
    IntelliTools Classroom Suite includes several templates which provide easy authoring opportunities for teachers and students to create accessible books to practice and support reading. This workshop will look at templates specifically designed to include previously scanned book pages, graphics, sounds, and movies. Books may be created to support any curriculum content area, social stories, or provide reading practice. Participants will be given sample books, photographs and QuickTime movie samplers to begin guided practice. They may bring digital files for further independent practice or work with media included with IntelliTools Classroom Suite.

    Goal
    To learn how to use and modify IntelliTools Classroom Suite templates to support reading in a wide range of curriculum content for students.

    What Is It?
    In this six hours, hands-on training, special educators will explore the alternate assessment activities and accessibility features of Stages Alternate Assessment software and learn how to capture primary evidence data for learners who don’t participate in standardized assessment. You will also see how to use the Stages Report Wizard for creating efficient alternate assessment and/or IEP reports.

    Stages Curriculum Integration Workshop

    What Is It?
    In this 6-hour hands-on follow-up to the Stages Foundations training, special educators will learn how to use a systematic approach to curriculum software selection within the Stages framework. Participants will learn how to identify the Stage in which a student is working and select and customize appropriate curriculum software to support learners at each Stage. In addition, Participants will learn strategies for evaluating and appropriately implementing curriculum software. CLT curriculum software will be used along with hands-on exploration of the online Stages Software Feature Comparison Charts.

    Who Should Attend?
    This workshop is designed for educators, SLPs, OTs, PTs, AT specialists, paraprofessionals and any other members of a service deliver team who support students with significant cognitive or language challenges (or have limited experience with Stages Assessment Software and the Stages Report Wizard).

    What Is It?
    This 2-day blended workshop combines the Foundations and Curriculum Integrations Workshops in format that alternates between learning Stages software and immediately exploring the appropriate CLT curriculum software that aligns with each stage. Day One covers Stages 1-3 and appropriate software for Stages 1-3. Day Two covers Stages 4-7 and the appropriate software for those stages. In addition, participants will learn to use the Stages Report Wizard for creating efficient alternate assessment and/or IEP reports.

Participants will learn how to how to maximize the effectiveness of using Stages with learners by learning how to interpret Stages Reports and Observations forms, plan appropriately for ongoing assessments, and determine when and how to progress students from Stage to Stage.
