Overview
Kurzweil 3000TM is the comprehensive reading, writing and learning
software solution for any struggling reader, including individuals with
learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder or those
who are English Language Learners.
With Kurzweil 3000, Kurzweil Educational Systems, Inc. is committed to helping
schools meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and
demonstrate success in the classroom for all students.
Kurzweil 3000 - Reading, Writing and Learning Software for
Struggling Students – offering:
Access to Any Curriculum - The software can access virtually any
information, whether it is printed, electronic, or on the Web. Because Kurzweil
3000 is also content independent, teachers in elementary schools, middle
schools, high schools and colleges alike use it to help students succeed in the
classroom regardless of curriculum or lesson plan.
Increased Reading Fluency - Educators and independent research have
demonstrated that Kurzweil 3000 provides not only the tools students need to
improve their reading speed and comprehension, but also the features that make
it possible for them to learn and study independently.
Study Skills - With the aid of visual and auditory feedback, the software
helps students keep up with assigned reading, learn critical study skills and
successfully complete writing projects and tests. With its robust study skills
tools, Kurzweil 3000 facilitates active reading including: highlighting, text
circle tools, annotations, Bookmarks, Voice Notes and Extract in order to
create outlines, study guides, or word lists – all things that can improve
their reading comprehension and retention.
Decoding Support - It then reads the words aloud to the student in clear,
humanlike, synthetic speech, while a patented dual highlighting feature adds
visual reinforcement. For students who have difficulty physically accessing
curriculum materials, Kurzweil 3000 provides a digital means of engaging with
text and can support students who use alternative methods for accessing the
computer.
Writing and Self-Editing Tools - As students type, the software speaks
each letter or word, so they can quickly re cognize and correct spelling
mistake s. The Check Spelling As You Type feature underlines misspelled words
in red. The audible spell checker and customizable word prediction further
assist students with creating and modifying reports, essays and papers without
teacher intervention.
Independent Test Taking – With Kurzweil 3000, students can independently
complete worksheets, classroom tests and standardized tests with greater
confidence and fewer mistakes. Students with accommodations can easily answer
fill-in-the blanks, multiple choice, true/false, short answer, essay and other
test forms while using a customized selection of writing tools, comprehension
aids and visual modifications. Teachers can save documents with specific
toolbars and feature locks, while also controlling which Kurzweil 3000 features
are available to students during testing. Kurzweil 3000 supports the teaching
and learning of reading skills that are necessary for meeting state and federal
mandates. Kurzweil 3000 not only reads questions and answers aloud, it allows
students to type answers directly onto the image of a scanned test, thereby
offering more independence for both the student and teacher. In addition, the
product is proving instrumental for both classroom and standardized
assessments.
Product Line
The Kurzweil 3000 product line consists of three different products, all
available either as standalone or network editions. Schools can mix and match
these products within their environment based on their needs.
Kurzweil 3000 Professional Color
Provides for the creation and delivery of electronic documents. Documents can be
scanned in color or black and white or opened from another application and
saved into Kurzweil 3000 proprietary format. Kurzweil 3000 users who only have
one copy of the product typically find it best to have a Kurzweil 3000
Professional which allows them to create and prepare documents as well as use
the powerful reading, writing and learning tools.
Some of the features unique to the Kurzweil 3000 Professional version include:
-
One-button scanning
-
Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
-
Edit Underlying Text
-
Zone Editing
-
Kurzweil Virtual Printer
-
Open As PDF (OS X only)
Kurzweil 3000 Professional Black and White
Provides the same features as the Color Professional product, but documents can
be scanned in black and white only. Documents scanned in color using the
Professional Color product can be displayed in color in the Professional Black
and White and LearnStation products.
Kurzweil 3000 LearnStation
Allows users to open documents scanned or “Virtual Printed” using Kurzweil 3000
Professional as well Microsoft Word, Rich Text, and Text, and several other
electronic document formats. Kurzweil 3000 LearnStation provides the same
powerful reading, writing and learning tools as the Kurzweil 3000 Professional
product. Users who have more than one copy of the product often have a
combination of Kurzweil 3000 Professionals and Kurzweil 3000 LearnStations.
Users can purchase the software in "Kurzweil 3000 Lab Packs", which
includes a mix of Professional and LearnStation software for school or district
wide use.

Kurzweil 3000 Pricing Page.
Network Edition
All Kurzweil 3000 products are available in network editions, where students can
log on from any networked computer running Kurzweil 3000 and access their
personal settings and files. Educators and network administrators can centrally
track student usage and progress and control the number of licenses in use.
In addition, the new Remote License-to-Go™ feature (for Windows only) allows
granting of licenses to users’ laptop computers, so users can access Kurzweil
3000 without being connected to the network. As a result, teachers and students
benefit alike by accessing Kurzweil 3000 in or out of the classroom. For
instance, if a teacher wants to take work home or have an IEP meeting with a
student’s parents to show Kurzweil 3000, or if a student needs to do homework,
Kurzweil 3000 is available whenever and wherever they are.
Web License Edition
The Web License Edition of Kurzweil 3000 differs from the Network Edition in
several ways. Most importantly, software license are not managed by software
stored on a school’s network, but rather, via a Web application hosted by
Cambium Learning Technologies. In addition to placing less of a burden on a
school’s IT team, Web Licensing allows students and teachers to install
Kurzweil 3000 on any computer—school, home, library, or other—and access one of
the school licenses. While individual end-users give up the ability to save
their specific preferences in a Web License installation, they more than make
up for this with added portability.
